Ingredients
- Pasta: Most pasta or egg noodles will work well in this recipe. Rigatoni, fusilli, penne, or bow tie are all great choices.
- Cream: Heavy whipping cream produces the best flavor and richest results. You can use half and half for a lighter dish if you prefer.
- Cream cheese: Cream cheese helps to make the sauce nice and thick. Use full fat for the best results, though you can use low fat.
- Swiss cheese: Shredded Swiss is mixed into the casserole and also added to the top before baking for one cheesy dish. You could also use white cheddar cheese or pepper jack cheese if you prefer.
- Seasonings: onion powder, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Chicken: Use sliced cooked chicken breasts or rotisserie chicken for this recipe. You can buy ready cooked from the store, or use this baked chicken recipe.
- Ham: Cubed cooked ham is mixed into the casserole for that cordon bleu flavor. You can use leftover ham or store-bought ham.
- Breadcrumbs: Use fine or panko breadcrumbs to finish the casserole before it’s baked for a crispy topping.

What is chicken cordon bleu?
Traditional chicken cordon bleu is ham and cheese slices rolled into a pounded chicken breast. It is then coated in breadcrumbs and pan or deep-fried. It’s a traditional French dish that was first made with veal. This casserole uses the elements and flavors of this classic dish.
How long does it keep?
I love making big casseroles like this so that we can enjoy them later in the week for an easy dinner. Once baked, let the casserole cool completely before covering it with plastic wrap or transferring it to an airtight container and keeping it refrigerated. The dish keeps well for up to 4 days and can be reheated in the oven at 360F, covered with foil, for around 15 to 20 minutes till warmed through.
What do you serve it with?
This easy chicken cordon bleu casserole is really hearty and filling, and can easily be served by itself. I like to serve this high-protein meal with a side of veggies to add some goodness to the plate. Try it with:
- Green Beans and Mushrooms
- Bacon Wrapped Asparagus
- Roasted Broccoli and Cauliflower
- Roasted Zucchini Slices
