Why you will love this Instant Pot sweet potatoes recipe!
- Quick and easy: It takes minutes to prep the potatoes before your Instant Pot does its job.
- Versatile: These sweet potatoes are great to serve up a healthy side dish, or load them up with your favorite toppings for a full meal.
- Dietary info: Sweet potatoes are naturally gluten-free and are Whole30 and paleo-friendly.
Ingredients
Similarly to what you need for baked sweet potatoes, you will need:
- Medium sweet Potatoes: Loaded with vitamin A, fiber and antioxidants, sweet potatoes are a great addition to a balanced diet.
- Water: You need to add about 1 cup of cold water to the bottom of the Instant Pot in order to pressure cook the sweet potatoes.
How to cook sweet potatoes in the instant pot
- Scrub the skin of sweet potatoes with a brush until clean. Pour water into Instant Pot and place the steamer basket in the bottom of the Instant Pot. Place sweet potatoes inside the steamer basket. If you don’t have a steamer basket, you can use a trivet.
- Secure the lid and turn the valve to sealing.
- Pressure cook the sweet potatoes on high pressure for 15 minutes.
- Allow pressure to release naturally.
- Once the pressure has released, remove the lid and carefully remove the basket with the sweet potatoes.
- Serve the sweet potatoes warm with a little bit of butter and a sprinkle of rosemary or cinnamon on top.
How do you serve them?
Once they have done cooking, I like to cut the sweet potatoes in half, add a little butter, salt and rosemary and serve them up as a side dish. You can easily add hearty toppings to turn them into a full meal. You can also remove the flesh from the skin and make Mashed Sweet Potatoes.
Topping Suggestions
If you want to serve these perfect Instant pot sweet potatoes as the main course, then you can add protein toppings like chili, baked beans, cottage cheese, or tuna mayonnaise. Serve alongside a fresh salad and you have a well-balanced meal ready to serve in no time at all!
Other Cooking Methods
I love how quick and easy it is to cook sweet potatoes in the Instant Pot and they come out so perfect! You can cook them in the microwave on high power in around 10 minutes, but I much prefer the results this pressure cooker gives.
You can also bake them in the oven, it will take around 45minutes, but you will get a nice crispy skin with this method.

Recipe Notes and Tips for Pressure Cooker Sweet Potatoes
- Use a steamer basket to place the sweet potatoes into the Instant Pot.
- I used a 6-quart Instant Pot, but you can also use a larger pressure cooker if you would like to cook more sweet potatoes or if you have large sweet potatoes.
- Depending on the size of your potatoes, you may need to adjust the cook time by a couple of minutes more or less.
- Naturally release the pressure once done cooking. This will continue to cook the sweet potato flesh so that they are nice and tender.
- You can also store in the fridge for 3-4 days in an airtight container.
