What is a BLT sandwich

BLT stands for bacon lettuce tomato which are added between two slices of bread or toast spread with mayo or your favorite sauce to make the best BLT sandwich.

BLT Sandwich Ingredients

  • Bread: I used gluten-free bread from Canyon Bakehouse but you can use your favorite bread for this recipe, wholegrain, white, sourdough all work well. I like to toast the bread to add a little extra crunch.
  • Tomatoes: Use large tomatoes cut into thick slices. Use vine-ripened tomatoes for the best flavor.
  • Bacon: Use cooked, thick-cut bacon and natural is preferable. Check out this guide for tips on how to cook bacon in the oven.
  • Lettuce: You can use bibb, iceberg, or romaine lettuce for this recipe.
  • Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise adds some moistness to the sandwich. I prefer to use full fat, but you can use low fat if you prefer.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • I definitely recommend toasting your bread. It adds a great crunch and I also find it easier to eat this way.
  • Dry your lettuce well before adding to the sandwich to avoid soggy bread.
  • Use pre-cooked bacon to make this BLT sandwich super quick to assemble.

How do you stop the bread from getting soggy?

There is nothing worse than soggy bread when you make a sandwich! Tomatoes contain quite a lot of moisture which can seep into the bread. Toast the bread to dry it out, and don’t skip the mayo, as this acts as a barrier between the bread and the filling. Be sure to dry your lettuce as well after washing it, use a salad spinner, or pat dry with kitchen paper.

Can you make them ahead of time?

These sandwiches are best prepared fairly close to serving them so that they stay nice and fresh, but you can pre-cook your bacon, as this will keep well in the fridge for around 5 days. You can also buy pre-cooked bacon for a super quick and easy option.

Recipe variations

This classic BLT sandwich recipe is pretty perfect as it is, but you can easily add other ingredients to the filling to make it your own. Try adding some mustard or ketchup for an extra burst of flavor, or add in some sliced grilled chicken for more of a club sandwich. Try adding a fried egg or some sliced avocado to really amp it up and take it to the next level!
