Healthy Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries

These oven-baked sweet potato fries are a healthier alternative to regular deep-fried or baked French fries. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They are just as tasty but much healthier to make at home to serve along with your juicy burger or as a side to your meal. They are also naturally Whole30, Paleo, and gluten-free. And the dipping sauce – it’s the perfect addition to your plate.

How To Make Baked Sweet Potato Fries

  1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Wash and peel the potatoes. Cut the sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch long slices and then into 1/4-inch wide strips. Place them in a large bowl and toss them with about 1/4 cup olive oil to coat. Sprinkle with paprika, garlic powder, rosemary, salt, and pepper, and toss to coat.
  3. Arrange the fries in a single layer in both baking sheets and don’t overcrowd.
  4. Bake in a preheated 400 F oven for 30 minutes, turning halfway through.
  5. Let the fries rest for about 10 minutes before serving them. This will help them crisp up a little bit more.

Expert Tips For The Best Crispy Sweet Potato Fries

If you are wondering how to make sweet potato fries crisp, follow these easy tips for the best sweet potato fries.

  • Cut evenly-sized sweet potato fries. This helps them cook evenly.
  • Coat them in starch (either cornstarch, tapioca, potato starch or arrowroot starch). This will help crisp the fries as they bake.
  • Use parchment paper. Using parchment paper will prevent the fries from sticking to the sheet and will help them crisp up nicely.
  • Don’t overcrowd the baking sheets. Make sure the potato fries are in a single layer and not overcrowded. Allowing air between the fries will help them roast better.
  • Flip all fries halfway through baking. After about 15 minutes of baking, take the baking sheets out of the oven and flip the fries so they all brown evenly on all sides.
  • Let the sweet potato fries rest for about 5-10 minutes. After the fries are done baking, transfer them to a cooling rack and let them rest before serving. This will help them crisp up a little bit more.
  • If you have a convection setting on your oven, use it. This helps air circulate constantly which promotes quick and even baking and crispy potatoes.
Dip for sweet potato fries

Dip For Fries – Smoked Paprika Aioli

One of my favorite dipping sauce for sweet potato fries is this smoked paprika garlic aioli. The smokey and salty flavor perfectly complements the crispy sweet potatoes. It’s made with mayonnaise, minced garlic, smoked paprika, garlic powder, lime juice, and salt & pepper. I also like to use this dip for topping chicken, fish, club sandwiches, and burgers but you can also dip shrimp, veggies, and snacks.

Recipe FAQs

Why won’t my baked sweet potato fries get crispy?

Your baked sweet potato fries might not get crispy due to a few reasons. First, make sure you cut the sweet potatoes into evenly sized pieces for even cooking, and that you coat them a starch. Secondly, overcrowding the baking tray can lead to steaming instead of crisping. Lastly, using too much oil or not baking at a high enough temperature can also result in soft fries. Try adjusting these factors for crispier results!

Why are my oven baked sweet potato fries wet?

It could be due to excess moisture on the potatoes before baking. Make sure to pat them dry with a paper towel before seasoning. Also, overcrowding the baking tray can lead to steaming instead of crisping, causing the fries to be moist. Giving them enough space to breathe and crisp up evenly can help prevent them from being wet.

Love the recipe… but wondering, when do you coat with starch? Before or after olive oil? Or is this in lieu of olive oil and spices?

I found this recipe while searching for a dipping sauce for sweet potato fries. I didn’t follow the recipe for the fries exactly (just used olive oil, salt and pepper), though I did follow the tip to use my convection setting to make the fries crispier. But the sauce, oh the sauce! One of the best sauces I’ve ever made. Was perfect for sweet potato fries. I’m looking forward to making the fries again just to have the sauce!
