Why you will love this recipe!
- Easy and quick: There’s nothing complicated about this sandwich recipe, just layer the ingredients and you are good to go!
- Great for kids: These sandwiches are great for kids of all ages, and if you have lots of mouths to feed, you can make up a big batch pretty quickly.
- Simple ingredients: You only need a few basic ingredients to make the best club sandwich, and you’l likely have a lot of things to hand already.
Club Sandwich Ingredients
- Bread: You can use whatever bread you like for this recipe, though I prefer to use thinner slices so that the sandwich is easier to eat. Lightly toast the bread for a crispy texture.
- Mayonnaise: I prefer to use a full fat mayo, but you can use low fat if you prefer.
- Sandwich fillings: Turkey slices, tomato, cheddar cheese, ham slices, cooked bacon and lettuce leaves.
How to make a club sandwich
- Spread 1 tbsp of mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread. Arrange 3 slices down on your cutting board with mayo side up. Top one slice with half of turkey, tomato slices, and a slice of cheddar cheese.
- Place a slice of bread with mayo side down over the first slice with cheddar cheese. Top the second slice with ham, 2 slices bacon and 2 lettuce leaves. Season with salt and pepper and place the last slice of bread over the lettuce with mayo side down.
- Cut the sandwich in half or quarters and serve with your favorite side.
- Repeat for the second clubhouse sandwich.
Can you make it ahead of time?
These classic club sandwiches are best enjoyed fairly soon after you’ve made them so that the bread stays nice and crisp. You can make them up a few hours ahead of time and keep them refrigerated, and you can cook up the bacon ahead so that everything is ready to go.
What else can you add to it?
This is a traditional club sandwich recipe, but you can easily mix up the fillings to suit your tastes. Rather than mayo, you could use garlic aioli, or add an additional condiment like mustard or fry sauce. Other salad ingredients like sliced cucumber work well and you can swap the turkey for chicken.
What do you serve it with?
This clubhouse sandwich, of course, can be eaten on its own, it’s hearty and filling. It’s also great served with other favorite sides for a fuller meal. Try it with:

Recipe Notes and Tips for the best Club Sandwich
- Toast the bread for the best texture. It also helps to hold everything together more than un-toasted.
- Use fresh and ripe tomatoes and lettuce for the best flavors.
- Thin bread is preferable over thick for an easier to eat sandwich.
- I used gluten-free bread from Canyon Bakehouse but you are welcome to use your favorite sandwich bread.
