Ways To Cook a Turkey & Gravy

Helpful Thanksgiving Turkey Tips

Before you get started, grab my FREE Turkey Timing Guide — a handy chart that tells you exactly how long to thaw and roast your turkey based on its size, plus helpful serving size info.

Turkey Thawing:
Plan for 24 hours of thawing time per 4–5 pounds of turkey in the refrigerator. A 15-lb turkey needs about 3 days to fully thaw. For a faster method, submerge the wrapped turkey in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes (allow 30 minutes per pound).

Turkey Roasting:
For a juicy, golden-brown bird, roast your turkey at 325°F and plan on 15 minutes per pound for an unstuffed turkey. Use a meat thermometer and cook until the thickest part of the breast reaches 165°F. Pat the skin dry and rub with butter or oil for the best crispy skin.

Turkey Serving Size:
Estimate 1½ pounds of turkey per adult and 1 pound per child if buying a whole turkey. If you’re making just a turkey breast, plan on ½–¾ pound per person.
