We are big fans of Mexica food here, whether it’s tacos, chili, burritos or quesadillas. I just love the bold flavors from this cuisine.

This avocado crema recipe is the perfect accompaniment to all of these dishes. It’s creamy and cooling and adds a wonderful brightness of flavor to help balance out the spices.

Super versatile, it’s great on my blackened salmon tacos and baked chicken fajitas.

Ingredients You Will Need for Avocado Sauce

  • Avocado: Use a ripe avocado that gives a little when you press it.
  • Lime juice: Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best flavor.
  • Cilantro: Adds a wonderful herby freshness. If you don’t like cilantro, you can substitute it for parsley.
  • Salt and pepper: To taste.
  • Sour cream: I prefer to use a full fat sour cream that is richer and creamier, but you can use low fat if you prefer.

How To Make Avocado Crema

It really couldn’t be easier to make this recipe!

  • Mix all ingredients in a small food processor.
  • Serve with tacos, nachos, or anything else you like to top with avocado cream sauce.

That’s it!

How long does avocado crema keep?

This avocado sauce can be made up to 2 days in advance. The acid in the lime juice helps to prevent the avocado from browning. After that you will see a change in color. Store it covered in the fridge until you are ready to use it, or you can freeze it in small batches and thaw them as you need them.

Make It Your Own!

It’s really easy to add your own spin to this delicious avocado sauce. I love to experiment and add different flavors depending on what I plan to serve it with. Try adding:

  • Diced jalapeno
  • Cotija cheese
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Roasted red peppers
  • Salsa
  • Chopped fresh dill
  • Pico de Gallo
  • Cumin

What else can you serve it with?

As well as a topping for your favorite Mexican mains, this avocado sauce can also be served as a dip or as a sandwich or wrap spread. It’s great drizzled over roasted vegetables and sweet potato fries. I’m sure you’ll find a use for it!

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • The quickest way to make this avocado crema is in a food processor, but if you don’t have one you can chop and mash everything by hand and mix to combine. It will take a little longer, but it will still be good.
  • Make sure you avocado is ripe before you use it. If it is not ripe it won’t combine as easily.

Do you know about how long it will last in the fridge after making?

    1. Neli | Delicious Meets Healthy says:

I haven’t tried to store it in the fridge for long, but maybe it will be fine for 24 hours in the refrigerator since it has lime juice.
