Growing up, my grandmother always had a simple remedy for everything – homemade lemon tea. Whenever I had a cold or felt under the weather, she would make me a warm cup, squeezing fresh lemon into the warm water and stirring in a spoonful of honey with such care. She believed in its soothing power, and whether it was the warmth, the citrusy aroma, or just the comfort of her presence, it always made me feel better.

This simple honey lemon tea is a great pick-me-up during cold winter days and takes only a few minutes to make.

  • Lemon: With its zesty flavor, it adds a refreshing and energizing touch to your tea!
  • Honey: I like to use raw natural honey rather than imitation honey for the best flavor. To make this drink vegan, you can use maple syrup instead. You can also use non-natural sweetener like granulated sugar or stevia if that’s what you have to hand.
  • Warm water
  • Optional add-ins: fresh mint leaves add a nice aroma. You can also add chopped fresh ginger or turmeric, lemon slices, or curled lemon peel for more nutrient-rich tea.

How To Make Lemon Tea

Step 1. Squeeze fresh lemon juice into a teacup or mug.

Step 2. Heat water and carefully pour it into the cup with the lemon juice. Stir well.

Top Tips for Best Lemon Honey Tea

  • Use fresh lemon juice rather than bottled. This will give you the best flavor. This is my favorite lemon squeezer (affiliate link).
  • Don’t use boiling water. My late grandmother taught me that for the best flavor, you need warm water not boiling water. The ideal water temperature for this tea is around 110 – 140 F, warm enough to sip comfortably. Use a temperature-controlled kettle or heat on the cooktop, and take off the heat just when you see tiny bubbles forming.
  • I like to add a slice of lemon to my tea because as it steeps, it adds more of its delicious and refreshing citrus flavor.
  • You can easily adapt this lemon and honey tea recipe to suit your tastes by adding more lemon juice or honey.

Serve It Hot or Cold

In the winter, I like to enjoy this drink as soon as I’ve made it, but it makes for a great cold drink too. Make up the drink, let it cool completely, and then place it in the fridge to chill. You can then serve this iced lemon tea over ice for a refreshing drink on a hot day. You can also add a couple of mint leaves for extra flavor.

Make Ahead Tip

This lemon tea recipe makes enough for one drink, but it is easily doubled and tripled. You can make a larger batch and then keep it in the fridge for up to a week. You can enjoy it cold or heat it gently on the stovetop to serve it warm.
