Apple Chips Ingredients

This is what you need for making homemade apple chips in the oven:

  • Apples: You can use any kind of apples for these chips, but I prefer to use nice tart and firm apples like Granny Smith or Pink Lady.
  • Ground cinnamon: Check that your cinnamon isn’t stale if it’s been in your cupboard since last fall! Rub a little between your fingers and it should release an aroma.
  • Sweetener (optional): I like to use a little bit of powdered sweetener (monk fruit sweetener or allulose sweetener) as it is much finer and dissolves into the apples.

How to make apple chips in oven

  • Preheat oven to 200°F and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • Sift powdered sweetener and cinnamon into a bowl.
  • Wash and thinly slice the apples using a mandoline to 1/16”. Remove seeds from the slices. Spread the apple slices onto the baking sheets in a single layer. Using a sifter or sieve, sprinkle each slice with the cinnamon and sweetener mixture on each side.
  • Bake for 1 hour, flip the apples over and bake for another 1-1.5 hours. Turn the oven off and keep the apples inside as the oven cools down for 1 hour. This will help them get crunchy.

How to Store Them?

Store the cinnamon apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature and they will keep for up to a week. Be sure to let the chips cool completely before storing them so that they stay crisp.

Can you freeze them?

Yes, they freeze really well, so it’s a great way to put all those fall apples to use. Place them in a freezer bag and squeeze out as much air as possible so that they don’t oxidize. They will keep well for up to 3 months.

They can be defrosted at room temperature and it’s best to remove them from the bag to defrost on a baking sheet or rack so that they don’t absorb too much moisture.

Best Apples for Homemade Apple Chips

The best apples for apple chips are tarter and firmer apples because they hold their shape better when baked. Granny Smith, Pink Lady, and even Galas have a great flavor and texture.

How do you slice the apples?

For the crispiest apple chips, it’s important to slice them as thinly as you can. I found that the easiest and quickest way is with a mandolin. You can also use the slicing attachment on a food processor. You can slice them by hand, but try and keep the slices the same size so that they cook evenly.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • If you have a dehydrator, you can use that instead of the oven. It will take around 10 hours at a temperature of 135F.
  • Leave the skins on the apples as this will help them to keep their shape.
  • Be patient and let the cinnamon apple chips sit in the oven for an hour after baking if you want to get really nice and crispy apple chips.
  • Slice the apples really thin. It’s best if you use a mandoline to slice them.
