Ingredients

To make this sausage ball recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Almond meal: To help absorb any moisture and to make these sausage balls gluten-free.
  • Egg: To help bind the ingredients together.
  • Cheddar cheese: For best results shred the cheese yourself.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • Don’t use pre-shredded cheese, shred your own for best results.
  • If your mixture seems dry, add a bit of milk to moisten
  • You can mix the sausage quickly using a hand mixer, or by hand. All of the ingredients should be well combined.
  • Use a scoop to make preparation easy.

Serving Suggestions

These sausage balls are great to serve up as part of a simple buffet with dips, spreads, veggies and all of your other favorite finger foods.

If you have leftovers, you can stir them into a simple pasta sauce and serve over spaghetti for a yummy main meal.

Dips for Sausage Balls

I love to serve these easy sausage balls with my favorite dips. The raspberry chili and apricot chili dips are made with sweet chili sauce. They are slightly spicy but not too much.

  • Honey Mustard Dip: 2/3 cup mayo, 3 Tbsp Dijon mustard, 3 Tbsp honey, ½ tsp garlic powder, salt, and pepper
  • Raspberry Chili Dip (pictured): 1/2 cup raspberry jam & 1/2 cup sweet chili sauce
  • Apricot Chili Dip (pictured): 1/2 cup apricot jam & 1/2 cup sweet chili sauce

Can you make them ahead of time?

These sausage and cheese balls are a great make-ahead appetizer. You can mix the sausage, roll it into balls, and then keep them covered in the fridge for a day. The following day, proceed with the baking as directed. You can also refrigerate the sausage mixture before rolling it into balls.

Can you freeze sausage balls?

You can freeze the sausage balls when they are raw, and then thaw and bake the day you are ready to eat them. They will keep frozen for up to 3 months. You can also freeze cooked sausage balls and they will keep for about 3 – 6 months as well.

How long do they keep?

Once cooked, these keto sausage balls will keep well, covered in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. They are safe to eat cold as they are fully cooked, or you can heat them through in the oven at 350 F. Cover them with foil so that the outsides don’t over brown.

I love that these are gluten free for starters! So many meatballs are not. Secondly, these have got to taste so delicious with Borden cheese in the mix. Thirdly, I love that these can be frozen and used at a different time. Perfect for party-planning! Yum yum yum!

  2. Amanda says:

I’ve never tried almond meal in meatballs, and I’m intrigued! I’ve been low-carb’ing, so this would be such a great alternative to bread crumbs with the sausage. Great party tips too for serving a buffet!

Thanks, Amanda! You should try them with almond meal, they turned out amazing! 🙂

I have never actually had sausage balls – but now I have no idea why!! They sound delicious, and the perfect food for serving to guests, plus I am pretty sure my sausage loving kids would be in heaven if I served these up for dinner! Love the use of the almond meal – I bet that adds a nice flavor twist.

  8. Sarah @ Champagne Tastes says:

I’m honestly not sure that I’ve ever eaten a sausage ball, but the husband loves meaty appetizers like this! And I love the almond meal hack- I’m not gluten free but I like to have options for when I’m cooking for someone who doesn’t eat it!

  9. Lisa | Garlic & Zest says:

I haven’t made sausage balls in ages — I’m talking 20 years… but they’re so good. I like the gluten free aspect of your recipe because I have a cousin recently diagnosed with celiac and I’m always looking for ways to accommodate her diet.

  10. Michele says:

I love the sliced cheeses for grilled cheese sandwiches because I love how melty the cheese becomes. Adding it to my sausage meat ball? Brilliant! Cant wait to have this for our TGIF cocktail party!
